The manager and I spoke indepth with the factory Audi Tech Rep. Then I moved and landed a job in service at a Porsche, Audi, Jag dealer. I was once like you and I bought my '98.5 Audi new and added a GIAC 1.0 bar chip and ran a non Audi/VW (VAG) approved oil as well, yet it exceeded the manufactures requirements. I'd still be curious to check it out anyway. Scott, could you please post a link to the forum you speak of. However, I think a lot of others would agree with me when I say that if I could get it from VW, without disrupting the warranty, I most definetly would. And yes I know the software is "undetectable" but I still have my reservations. I'm not keen to do this with 47,000 miles left in the life of the warranty. I spoke with the service writer at my dealership and he specifically made it clear that messing with the ECU is the only thing that kills the warranty, and ANYTHING that goes wrong with the engine will not be covered. Really the only thing stopping me from chipping right now is the warranty issue. Every time someone drops $500 on a APR/GIAC/ReVO software program which essentially costs nothing to VW besides initial R&D costs, VW is losing out, and they know it. Although I think it to be unlikely that this will happen, VW is losing a ton of money to other tuners.
